WEAR THIS

An app that allows users to digitize their wardrobe so they can tackle the ever-burning question: What should I wear today?

LEAD UX DESIGNER

MY ROLE

As the lead UX Designer I completed:

  • Discovery: secondary research, user interviews, thematic analysis, empathy maps, personas, jobs-to-be-done statements, how might we statements, user stories

  • Design: user flows, sketches, wireframes, low-fidelity prototypes, high-fidelity prototypes, site maps, style guide

  • Validate: guerilla usability testing, remote moderated usability testing, heuristic analysis, design critique

PROBLEM

How long did it take you to choose your outfit today?

As adults in the United States, we make an estimated 35,000 decisions a day (Sollisch, 2016). We may even forget we own certain items or we repeat outfits way too often. Mass production and fast fashion have cluttered our closets giving us too many choices. Too much choice requires increased time and effort and can lead to anxiety, regret, excessively high expectations, and self-blame if the choices don’t work out (Shwartz, 2006).

SOLUTION

Using the design thinking methodology, I designed an app that allows users to digitize their wardrobe so they can:

  1. effectively organize all of their clothing articles

  2. have easy access & visibility when creating an outfit

  3. schedule outfits in advance to minimize stress before going to work or going out

HIGH FIDELITY PROTOTYPE

LESSONS LEARNED

After completing the usability testing and the synthesis of those sessions, I was able to understand how critical this process is. It became very clear to me how valuable it is to step back from the design and see it from a different perspective. More importantly, to see it from the perspective of the user. I was so grateful that all of my participants were super excited about the app and had so many nice things to say. All users expressed how useful this app would be for them on a daily basis. It was a truly rewarding experience to be able to hear all of their compliments and also what they would do to improve the design. I welcomed all of their suggestions and encouraged them to be honest about their opinions. I felt really great about my skills to facilitate the usability testing sessions and how comfortable I made my participants feel.

Thanks to this project I feel like I can now prioritize the right things at the right time. What I mean by that is that I now know the value that I can gain from conducting extensive research and how that will make my design 10x better. As I prepare for my next project, I am prepared to improve every aspect of my design thinking and process.
